The Real Virus

I recognized the spirit of fear from my experiences in Asia. Massive and arrogant, he boldly swaggered through my mind’s eye, even while our little group prayed fervently for our world. As I watched, he suddenly began to shrink, smaller and smaller until he became microscopic in size.

Suddenly, a single, diseased cell appeared in the scene, and this spirit of fear swiftly hid himself within it. The organisms energized and grew, multiplying quickly on land, sea, and air. I somehow knew this was the Coronavirus. Collectively, our little group joined our hearts and voice to stand firm against this world-force of darkness.

As I returned home, I searched for the etymology of the word “corona.” First used by virologists in 1968, it was so named since its appearance is similar to the ring of radiant gases swirling around the outermost atmosphere of the sun. As I pondered on this visual, God’s Word came to mind, “No advantage (should) be taken of us by satan, for we are not ignorant of his schemes (2 Corinthians 2:11).

This current panic is merely one of satan’s schemes and nothing more. Since his ejection from heaven, Lucifer has been grasping for dominion over minds and lives. In this event, he is causing panic to lead us from the simple fact that we are God’s offspring and have nothing to do with the spirit of fear (Acts 17:29).

Oh, and the meaning of the Latin word, corona? “Wreath or crown.” How appropriate. The evil one has desired to usurp the King of kings ever since the fall. This time, he seeks to do so by encircling us in a fog of deception.

We have the mind of Christ, so let’s think His thoughts! Let’s dwell on the true, the honorable, the right, and the pure (Philippians 4:8). Let’s actively turn every anxious thought into one of praise and thanksgiving. Instead of being infected with fear, let’s receive a new injection of Power, Love, and a Sound Mind (2 Timothy 1:7). Unite with me in this prayer for peace:

Holy Father,

Confusion and fear are wreaking havoc upon our world. Uncertainties in the government, the stock market, and the Coronavirus have stirred us into a frenzy. If we are discerning, we recognize this to be the work of an enemy (Matthew 13:25). The evil one always uses doubt and anxiety to kill, steal, and destroy our peace (Matthew 13:28: John 10:10). Sometimes evil looks like a roaring lion (1 Peter 5:8), and sometimes like an angel (2 Corinthians 11:14), but his essence never changes. Our enemy is always pro-dark and anti-Light.

Thank You, Father, that You are not a God of confusion, but a God of peace (1 Corinthians 14:33). You are more enduring than any rule, disease, or financial uncertainty (1 John 4:4; 2 Corinthians 10:4; Psalm 91:3; Matthew 6:30). Wherever Your Spirit is, there is tremendous freedom to walk as an heir to Your unending monarchy (2 Corinthians 3:17; John 1:12). I will not crown the evil one by allowing him to encapsulate my thoughts.

You know exactly how many days I will live (Job 14:5). Disease and peril can’t unexpectedly change that number. Even before my birth, You predetermined the number of minutes I would live (Psalm 139:16). If quarantine comes, teach me to use each day fully, setting my mind on truth and focusing on what is right and pure (Psalm 90:12; Philippians 4:8).

Thank You for being the fortified Stronghold that I can run into (Psalm 94:22). Station Your mighty warrior angels to guard me in Your place of refuge, so that no oppressive thoughts can enter my mind (Zechariah 9:8). I stand on Your promise to deliver me from every evil deed and to bring me safely into Your Kingdom (2 Timothy 4:18). When I am too afraid to move, seize my hand and pull me into safety (Genesis 19:16). And where I am weak, increase my faith. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.
