Staying Strong: A Visual

The malevolent edifice loomed large and expansive before me. As I craned my neck to see the top of the skyline, I felt the same awareness of height as when I visited the giant sequoia forest for the first time. This was nothing like I expected. I stepped back to inspect the width and noticed that the exterior wall encircled an extensive city teeming within.

Although I’d been vaguely aware of this impregnable structure for weeks, this was my first glimpse of the stronghold. A hostile evil secured every point of entry, and even from my outlying vantage point, I felt the antagonistic presence. Indeed, a strong man lived there.

Deeply aware of my inadequacy, I checked my armor. When assured that every piece fitted properly, I glanced to my Commander in Chief. His nod indicated that I was in the right location. My target: a stronghold of thoughts.

Before beginning this assignment, my Captain revealed that I must focus on His armory’s effectiveness, not upon the enemy’s loftiness. Every stone of this expanse was a strongly mortared belief system built to keep darkness in and Light out. My mission was to place spiritual detonators of truth along the perimeter and await His signal (2 Corinthians 10:4-5).

My Commander explained that the strong man uses brainwashing techniques to lure thoughts into deception. Once established, the enemy layers these false viewpoints into a structure built up against the knowledge of God. Subsequently, all imprisoned mind-sets are kept subservient through his deceit and trickery.

Demolishing these deceitful reasonings might seem counter-intuitive, He explained. Although the project initially would prove destructive, His intent was ultimately constructive (2 Corinthians 10:8). When His Kingdom warriors pull down these walls of thought, they are freeing captive minds to see truth. The same divinely powerful Word He provides to dismantle self-exaltation will be useful to shine Light over into this shadow of death (Luke 1:74-79).

“Do not fear,” He encouraged. “For years, you have been storing the weapons of My Word in your heart. My Logos is living, active, and sharper than any enemy barrier (Hebrews 4:12). I formed this divine weapon for Myself, out of the essence of My omnipotent might. None of the weapons formed against you shall prosper (Isaiah 54:17).

“My weaponry will not only affect your target but radiate Light into everything nearby (2 Thessalonians 3:1). My Word is fast (Psalm 147:15), enlarges on impact (Acts 19:20), and passes My rigorous quality control (Psalm 18:30).

“Be flexible. Don’t expect to utilize My Word the same way, every time, even in similar situations. We must keep our enemy guessing, so follow My commands closely. At times, your sword will burn with fire (Jeremiah 24:29). At others, it will shatter like a sledge, allowing you to pulverize mountainous philosophies into dust (Isaiah 41:15).

“At times, I will call you to hammer the sword into a plowshare. It is easily repurposed from a weapon of warfare into an instrument of peace (Isaiah 2:4). This Word of truth is as effective for fruit-bearing as deceit destroying (Colossians 1:6). Now is the time to utilize the power I’ve implanted within your grasp (James 1:21).”

With such an effective strategy, I looked again at the stronghold before me. I will wield this weapon which the Commander Himself deems sufficient. Despite my weakness and inadequacy, I lift my shield of faith and move forward in prayer (2 Corinthians 3;5; Ephesians 6:16). My arrows find their mark because of their built-in guidance system. He has trained my hands for war and my fingers for battle (Psalm 144:2), so I am confident this lofty edifice will fall (Jeremiah 48:1; Luke 10:18).

Grant me strength, O Captain. Grant me strength.
