Prayer Over the Messiness of Divorce

Divorce Decree

Holy Father,

In my own inadequacy, I confess that I really don’t know how to pray for ________. Divorce is a messy, sticky, and often angering situation — a situation that no one expects to endure. I am comforted knowing that as I bring (Name)’s experience to Your Throne Room, I find Your Son there, already interceding for them (Hebrews 7:25).

What a relief to know that I don’t have to come up with my own prayers. Your Son is already bent over, aligning Your will into readiness in the heavenlies. So, I come boldly before the Throne on behalf of this little family (Hebrews 4:16). In hand, I have the keys to the kingdom that You have given me, ready to release into their lives and heart all that You have already prepared (Matthew 16:19). Your will is already being carried out for them perfectly in heaven (Matthew 6:10) and You have already stockpiled love (Romans 5:5), favor (Ephesians 4:7) and completeness (Colossians 2:10) for them.

But this treasure kinda has a double-sided door, huh? Your side has already swung completely and fully open, but someone has to come with the earthly pass key to open the side. So, here I am, Father; inserting the kingdom key confidently into this request for them, knowing that You have chosen gladly to give them the kingdom (Luke 12:32).

Satan stands opposing this outpour of blessing. He remains a destroyer (John 10:10), a deceiver (John 8:44) and a disguiser (2 Corinthians 11:14). He is making this look like it is between a man and a woman, when it is really just about him. But we are not ignorant of his schemes (2 Corinthians 2:11). We recognize that all of this mess has come from the very pit of darkness.

In the Name of Jesus, I rebuke the spirit of anger, the spirit of chaos, and the spirit of pride (you may add others here), demanding that each of you be cast bound underneath my feet (Joshua 10:16-24). Father, You are our Commander-in-Chief. Through You, I push back these spiritual adversaries and through Your Name I trample down these who have risen up against (Name/s) (Psalm 44:4-5). I tread upon the dark spirits like enemies in the mire of the streets of battle (Zechariah 10:5). I have obeyed You in bringing them under domination, Lord (2 Corinthians 10:4-5). Now, come do Your part. As my Holy Joshua, come strike these spiritual adversaries and put them to death (Joshua 10:26). This war is not against individual people — flesh and blood, but against the rulers of darkness. God of peace, come crush satan underneath our feet (Romans 16:20).

In all honesty, it must be You Who treads down these enemies (Psalm 60:12).

As these enemies of deceit, anger and chaos are defeated, stream Your blessing of peace and fulness into (Name’s) life. May the Holy Spirit come upon them and the power of the Most High overshadow them to such an extent that all around them realize that truly nothing is impossible with God (Luke 1:35; 37). As You move this mountain into the sea (Matthew 17:20), replace it with green pastures and quiet waters (Psalm 23:2). Restore (Name’s) soul (Psalm 23:4).

Indeed, I don’t understand how You will accomplish all of this, it seems impossible, but my eyes are upon You, not upon the problem (2 Chronicles 20;12). During the meantime, while this evil host seems encamped against (Names), please give them heart confidence without fear (Psalm 27:3). Cause them to daily remember You (Psalm 27:4). Keep our eyes riveted upon You (2 Corinthians 3:18; Hebrews 12:2), because in seeing You there is both hope and transformation (1 John 3:2-3). Selah.
