On Behalf of Our Cities

O Father,

Why are the nations in an uproar and the people devising a vain thing? (Psalm 2:1) As predicted, the rulers and influencers are counseling together against Your truth and light (Psalm 2:2). None of this surprises You for this is the same battle that has raged since before time began. The world forces of darkness and the spiritual forces of wickedness continue their rebellious march against all that is pure (Ephesians 6:12).

Grant us strength to remember that You rule over everything and hold all power in the palm of Your Hand (1 Chronicles 29:12). You see into the future and laugh at all evil strategic plots (Psalm 2:4; 37:13). One day, every knee will bow and every tongue confess that You were right all along (Philippians 2:10). Through Jesus, You will accomplish whatever Your Hand and Your purpose desires (Acts 4:28).

As we gladly await that day, we realize that we are in a battle. Come train us for this spiritual war, giving us specifics in our prayers (Psalm 144:1). Keep our eyes focused on the Source of our strength as we daily suit up against our enemy (Psalm 121:1-2; Ephesians 6:10-11). “No soldier in active service entangles himself in the affairs of everyday life, so that he may please the one who enlisted him as a soldier” (2 Timothy 2:2). Convict us of our many distractions and “bind our wandering hearts to Thee” (hymn – Come, Thy Fount of Every Blessing, 1757).

You encouraged Your Son Jesus to ask for His inheritance (Psalm 2:8). So in obedience, He asked for the nations and now sits enthroned above all kingdoms of the earth (Psalm 113:4-5). He is King of kings and Lord of lords (Revelation 19:16). And thankfully, this One Who has dominion over all is also our Elder Brother (Romans 8:29).

Because of God’s great love towards us, He was not content for us to just be included into His family. He sees potential in us, so He extends the Kingdom inheritance to us as well (Luke 12:32). He made us to be a kingdom of priests, who, like His Son, is a mixture of royalty and service (Revelation 1:6; 1 Peter 2:9). This dual role not only speaks to man on God’s behalf, but also speaks to God on man’s behalf. Our authority and responsibility is mind-boggling. Teach us to rule and serve well.

Together with other intercessors, we stand against the devil’s wiles (Ephesians 6:11). I read once that in Greek, this literally means “to hold your ground.” Indeed, our family, church, and city are already ours through the blood and dominion of Christ. We are not warring to save them but to defend them from enemy invasion.

Thank You, Father, for giving us this inheritance through Your Son. Jesus is the One Who conquered evil and satan’s demise is already a reality (Colossians 2:15). We do not battle with him to win a victory but to maintain the one You have already achieved. Open our eyes to see this clearly so we will war with faith rather than desperation.

Hallelujah! You reign. Receive the above request as authorized by Your Son. He said I should use His Name rather than my own. Amen.
