How to Pray for the Lost

Holy Father,

How blessed are You, the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ (Ephesians 1:3). You O Lord made heaven, earth, and everything in-between (Acts 4:24). You created earth as an extension of Your divine Kingdom, creating man in Your Image and setting him in charge of upholding Your rule and reign (Genesis 1:26,28; 2:15).

Yet, man loved knowledge rather than life (Genesis 2:17; 3:6), and lost this domain to a dark, impostor prince (Luke 4:6). This strong prince of darkness immediately moved in to homestead the earth (Luke 11:21), asserting his ownership and laying claim to all that had originally been created for man (Psalm 115:16).

When the first man implicated himself with this kingdom of darkness, the rest of mankind was ensnared as well (Romans 5:12). A self-seeking attitude birthed into the nature of every man afterwards, smudging the image God had created with pride and deceit (Genesis 3:5-6). The consequence destined our entire species for death (1 Corinthians 15:21-22).

Man now owed a debt, only paid in blood. The evil one perceived this, knowing no man would be able to defend himself in heaven’s courtroom (Job 10:32-33). Man’s destiny looked hopeless.

But Your nature O God is salvation. You would not leave Your creation subject to futility or Your prodigal ones to wander (Romans 8:20; Luke 15:4). You sent Your Son to seek and save Your lost ones (Luke 19:10; John 3:17). Although costly, You dispatched Your Son, the true Prince, to be born into man’s likeness (Philippians 2:6-7; Romans 5:8-9). The One Who existed in Your Likeness assumed the likeness of man to buy back not only the squandered dominion, but especially man’s wasted life (1 Corinthians 6:20). Fleshly man had pilfered the kingdom, so a Man was responsible to buy it back.

Since our fate was death (Romans 6:23), Jesus had to overcome death, (Philippians 2:8), by condemning sin in the flesh (Romans 8:3). He paid our debt (Colossians 2:14) and bought our freedom (Galatians 5:1) by spilling His blood (Hebrews 9:11-12).

Therefore You accepted Jesus as the new Man, the perfected Adam (1 Corinthians 15:45) and restored Him as the Sovereign of Your Kingdom (1 Timothy 6:15-16). As King of kings, Jesus abolished the rule and authority of the impostor prince (1 Corinthians 15:24) and made a public display of him through His royal triumph (Colossians 2:15).

Although the conquest was won, You O Conquering General have not stopped the battle (2 Corinthians 10:3). You rose victorious over the enemy, but You see a greater good, motivated by love for Your prodigals. You leave the conflict open in order to woo us through Your love (Jeremiah 31:3; John 6:44). You desire our willing affection more than a forced treaty.

Hallelujah! You O God are our victorious, loving Deliverer! Your Son, Jesus Christ, now continually mediates for us in Your court (1 Timothy 2:5; Hebrews 7:25). You welcome His intercession and You desire every one of Your prodigals to know of their grand rescue (1 Timothy 2:4).

That is why I bring (unbeliever’s name) before Your throne. His deliverance has already been purchased. You do not wish any to perish, not even him, but for all to come into repentance (2 Peter 3:9). Jesus is now in heaven interceding for him, so I stand as earth’s envoy agreeing with Jesus’ prayer.

Prayer is the key to (unbeliever’s) rescue. You have done Your part. Now in prayer, I do my part. You made me an able minister of this new covenant (2 Corinthians 3:6), so I’m here to enforce the liberation You have already secured for (unbeliever’s) soul. This does not supersede his free will, for once he sees clearly the destiny You purposed for him, he will willingly choose You. Currently, he is being held captive by the evil one and blinded to truth (2 Timothy 2:25-26).

Jesus, Your work is already completed (John 19:30). You are now seated at the right Hand of God waiting for these enemies to be captured and brought to Your Feet (Hebrews 10:12-13). This is my part. You are waiting for me to delegate the authority in prayer that You’ve returned to mankind (Luke 10:19).

You don’t have to draft me into this prayer army. I’m volunteering freely for (unbeliever’s) salvation (Psalm 110:1,3). I realize this means that I’m also giving You authority over my life. Only those under authority can command authority (Matthew 8:8-9).

Come subdue the enemies of his soul. (Unbeliever’s) knowledge and pride have become hinderances to finding You. He thinks he has the right answers, but he is blinded to the knowledge of truth (2 Timothy 3:7). But, You have given Your recruits “spiritual weapons” to pull down these kind of fortresses (2 Corinthians 10:4).

So, in Jesus’ Name I bind up the enemies of soul (i.e. pornography, stubbornness, past wounds from the church, etc — Matthew 18:18). Place spiritual detonators in (unbeliever’s) life to destroy his past speculations about You, his current pride against knowing You, and any influences in his life which are hostile to Truth (2 Corinthians 10:5). Align these powerful detonators to discharge at Your perfect timing, removing blinders so that he may see Truth clearly. Once he sees You, he will be transformed (1 John 3:2), willingly stepping out of darkness and into Your marvelous Light (1 Peter 2:9).

Thank You that no matter how dismal the situation may look, You are greater than all doubt (1 John 3:20).  Increase my allotment of faith by Your goodness and mercy (Romans 12:3; Luke 17:5). But especially, help my unbelief (Mark 9:24). In Jesus’ Name I pray, Amen.
