Discouraged and Dispirited

Dear Mentor,
I am so discouraged. I have very little motivation in my life and feel that I am taken for granted. My daily tasks are menial and unappreciated, not at all the life I signed up for. Why has God left me in this barren place?

Dear Overlooked and Dispirited,

Following after Christ often leads you along a pathway of disappearance. Your hope comes in turning your eyes from who you can become, onto Who He is within you.

When you believed on Him, you received the right to become a child of God (John 1:12). Suddenly, you were a spiritual being, not because you made some kind of new decision (John 1:13), but because God purposed it so. You just held out your spirit to receive what He freely gives (1 Corinthians 1:30).

Along with that new spirit within, the laws governing you changed as well. Before Christ, you had no options. You did the best you could with your senses, mind and emotions.

But now, as a spiritual being, you have the option of living His way (1 Corinthians 15:44; Romans 7:25). You have the kingdom of God within you (Luke 17:21). The problem is that you still have the hardened shell of your own mind and emotions enclosing His residence. He can’t spill forth without first splitting open your resistance. The seal of the alabaster vial must be broken in order to allow His Holy perfume to pour out (Mark 14:3).

He pries at the seal of self, where it most tightly grips the vial. He touches your strength along the way knowing that it is only through weakness that His strength can stream forth powerfully (Psalm 102:23; 2 Corinthians 12:9). Sometimes, He uses a menial and unappreciated existence to weaken the seal. Sometimes, He puts us into situations far above our ability to cope. Even when you are noticed for your good works, His purpose remains that He will be glorified, not you (Matthew 5:16).

Be encouraged. The Father is actively and busily at work on your outer seed pod (John 5:17; Philippians 2:13). I can definitely see that. A grain of wheat has life inside, but it takes outer decay for that life to shoot forth (John 12:24). Rest and absorb His living water. The days of fruitfulness will come after this season. He has promised it (John 15:16).

                                      Grace and peace, Your Mentor
