“In preparation for landing, the pilot has illuminated the seat belt sign.”

Although these words bring no surprise, spiritual spaces can be quite unanticipated. Although not a flesh and blood existence, we became aware of spiritual “rulers, powers, and world forces” particular to some world areas (Ephesians 6:12). In time, I began to use the flight to prepare for whatever might be awaiting us when we stepped off the plane.

In Taiwan, the prince of the power of the air were spirits of fear, despair, and guilt. When we ventured into other destinations of Asia, the atmosphere swirled thick with lust, hopelessness, and arrogance. The more we learned about the culture and history of the country, the better we were to understand the spirits in residence there.

The United States was no different. America, too has powers raising their ugly heads against the knowledge of God. Fifteen years ago, spirits of distraction, deceit, and indulgence seemed most apparent. Now, the prince of the power of fear and hopelessness has expanded their dominance within our borders.

Following Jesus’ example, being aware of their character, and standing firm in the Lord are our best strategies for this war (Mark 5:9; Ephesians 6:10). Just as a federal agent studies the real thing to spot the counterfeit, we too must spend our time looking at the Truth rather than analyzing the father of lies. When it comes to spiritual warfare, we have no choice.

Nineteenth-century author R.A. Torrey says, “The reason why many fail in battle is that they wait until the hour of battle. The reason why others succeed is that they had gained their victory on their knees long before the battle came. Anticipate your battles; faith them on your knees before temptation comes, and you will always have victory.”

Spiritual victory depends on the faith that Christ is more potent than our foes (1 John 5:4). His strength and armor are more potent than the powers of darkness, even in your present moment. Handing Him your resistance effectually defeats satan’s power (1 Corinthians 15:24).

The evil one is definitely on the move. I don’t know a single Christian family who isn’t in the midst of a crisis. But we will stand strongest when we stand together. Call a few friends to pray with you. Plan a time with others who desire breakthroughs and spend the bulk of your hour praying.

“Now, my beloved ones, I have saved these most important truths for last: Be supernaturally infused with strength through your life-union with the Lord Jesus. Stand victorious with the force of His explosive power flowing in and through you. Put on God’s complete set of armor provided for us so that you will be protected as you fight against the evil strategies of the accuser! Your hand-to-hand combat is not with human beings but with the highest principalities and authorities operating in rebellion under the heavenly realms. For they are a powerful class of demon-gods and evil spirits that hold this dark world in bondage. Because of this, you must wear all the armor that God provides so you’re protected as you confront the slanderer, for you are destined for all things and will rise victorious” (Ephesians 6:10-13 The Passion).
