The Link between Sex Trade & Philia Kosmos

Nine years old and sold into the sex trade.

I’m appalled when I read such stories. Pained for the children, I can’t grasp how one life can be so unfeeling toward another – especially a child. What evil possesses someone to such an extent? How can money offer any joy to such a conscious?

I have a deep-seated hatred for human trafficking. I’m sure you share my passion.

The Greeks used this word for passionate amimosity in their classical literature:

Echthra” – Greek feminine noun – enmity, a deep, bitter, active hatred toward someone or something.

Synonyms include: animosity, bitterness, hostility

Yup. That pretty much sums up my feeling toward these actions against children.

James uses this same passionate feeling of active animosity in his epistle.

But I must admit that I am taken aback when I see its context.

You adulteresses, do you not know that friendship (“philia”) with the world (“kosmos”) is “echthra” with God?” (James 4:4).

God hates my filial feelings toward the world’s pleasures as much as I loathe sex trafficking.

I’m stunned.

So when we:

Surf the web looking at the latest fashions…..

Spend entire days toggling between sports events…..

Lie in bed dreaming of our next expenditure…..

What is God seeing?

Do not love the world, nor the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him. For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh and the lust of the eyes and the boastful pride of life, is not from the Father, but is from the world.” (1 John 2:15-16).

I’m grappling with this. How about you?
